Granite Slab Thickness Guide: 20mm vs 30mm for Countertop Fabricators and Contractors

  • July 31. 2026

Quick Answer

For most imported granite slab orders, 20mm and 30mm are the two main thicknesses to compare.

We normally recommend 20mm granite slabs for standard countertop production because they use less stone, cost less and provide better container efficiency. They are suitable for regular kitchen countertops, vanity tops and local fabrication when the finished pieces have normal-sized openings and reliable cabinet or frame support.

We recommend 30mm granite slabs for large islands, major sink or cooktop openings, narrow stone sections and countertops requiring a solid thick edge without lamination.

These thickness recommendations apply to both prefabricated and custom-cut formats in our granite kitchen countertop range, including standard tops, islands and project-sized components.

What Is the Standard Granite Slab Thickness?

The two most common granite slab thicknesses are 20mm (2cm or approximately 3/4 inch) and 30mm (3cm or approximately 1 1/4 inch). Both are standard specifications in international slab supply, although market preferences vary.

20mm is widely used by countertop fabricators that prioritize lower slab cost, lighter handling weight and better container efficiency. The 30mm option is more common for large islands, major cutouts and countertops requiring a solid thick edge.

Some granite materials are also available in 18mm or custom thicknesses, but most slab importers can begin by choosing between 20mm and 30mm. Because thickness availability varies by stone and current block size, buyers can use our granite color range to shortlist suitable materials before confirming the required thickness and slab dimensions.

20mm vs 30mm Granite Slabs

For standard countertop orders, 20mm granite is usually sufficient and more price-competitive, so we recommend it first. We recommend 30mm for large islands, major cutouts, narrow stone sections or countertops requiring a solid thick edge.

Buying consideration 20mm granite slabs 30mm granite slabs
Stone used per square metre 0.020m³ 0.030m³
Typical weight 50–54kg/m² 75–81kg/m²
Typical price About 8%–10% lower Higher
Freight per square metre Can be about 33% lower Higher
Recommended use Standard countertops, vanities and local fabrication Large islands, major cutouts and solid thick edges

How Much Can 20mm Granite Save?

A 20mm granite slab uses 33.3% less stone and weighs approximately 25–27kg less per square metre than the same material at 30mm.

Its price is generally about 8%–10% lower. Because the weight is also one-third lower, a weight-limited container can carry approximately 50% more slab area, reducing the ocean freight allocated to each square metre by about 33%.

For example, a container carrying about 240m² of 30mm slabs may carry approximately 360m² at 20mm. Actual loading depends on slab dimensions, granite density and packing weight.

Is 20mm Granite Thick Enough for Countertops?

Yes. We normally recommend 20mm granite for standard kitchen countertops and vanity tops.

The main risks arise around large cutouts and narrow remaining stone sections, such as sink rails, cooktop openings and the area between two basins. These sections require more support during fabrication, transport and installation.

  • Use 20mm for standard countertops with normal-sized openings;
  • Add structural support for unsupported overhangs beyond approximately 150mm;
  • Support the area below cutouts wider than approximately 600mm;
  • Consider 30mm for large islands, double-sink tops and narrow stone sections;
  • Change the layout or use 30mm if a natural fissure crosses a major cutout.

Which Thickness Fits Different Countertop Orders?

Standard Kitchen Countertops

For regular kitchen countertops with standard sink and cooktop openings, 20mm is the normal starting point.

It provides sufficient thickness for experienced fabricators while reducing slab price, workshop handling weight and freight cost per square metre.

Choose 30mm when the project requires:

  • A solid 3cm edge without lamination;
  • A large or unusually positioned opening;
  • A long finished piece with narrow stone sections;
  • A market-specific 3cm countertop program.

Vanity Tops

For standard single-basin and regular double-basin vanity tops, 20mm is normally sufficient.

The smaller depth and continuous cabinet support make vanity tops a practical use for lighter slabs. The lower weight also improves packing and installation efficiency for hotel, multifamily and wholesale programs.

Consider 30mm for long double-basin tops, narrow stone sections between openings or designs requiring a solid thick edge.

Large Kitchen Islands

For large kitchen islands, we normally begin with 30mm granite.

Large islands may include wide sink or cooktop openings, long unsupported areas and seating overhangs. These features can leave narrow stone sections around vulnerable points.

A 20mm island can still be produced when:

  • A suitable cabinet or steel support system is included;
  • Openings are positioned away from weak natural fissures;
  • The fabricator has experience handling large 2cm pieces;
  • Lower weight or a slimmer appearance is important.

For straightforward purchasing and fabrication, however, 30mm is usually the safer choice.

Prefabricated Countertops

For prefabricated countertop programs, 20mm can provide a strong commercial advantage by reducing material use, finished-piece weight and freight per square metre.

A laminated front edge can be added when the target market expects a thicker appearance. Choose 30mm when the countertop will be sold as a solid-thickness product and eliminating edge lamination is more valuable than maximizing container capacity.

How Thickness Affects Edge Fabrication

A 20mm slab works well with straight, eased and bevelled edges. When a thicker appearance is required, a matching granite strip can be bonded below the front edge to produce a laminated profile.

This allows fabricators to retain the cost and shipping advantages of 20mm while supplying a visually thicker countertop.

A 30mm slab creates a thicker edge without lamination and is normally more suitable for deep bullnose, ogee and other substantial profiles.

The edge profile should therefore be selected before confirming the slab thickness. Ordering 20mm and later requesting a deep solid edge adds fabrication work. Ordering 30mm for a slim straight edge adds weight and cost without providing enough additional value.

A Practical Thickness Plan for Importers

Order type Recommended starting point
Standard slab stock for local fabrication 20mm
Regular kitchen countertops 20mm
Standard vanity tops 20mm
Prefabricated countertops with laminated edges 20mm
Large kitchen islands 30mm
Double-sink tops with narrow stone sections Review for 30mm
Wide sink or cooktop openings Review for 30mm
Solid thick-edge countertops 30mm
Mixed residential or commercial projects Combine 20mm and 30mm

A mixed-thickness order can be more economical than changing every countertop to 30mm.

  • Use 20mm for standard kitchen countertops and vanity tops;
  • Use 30mm only for large islands, wide openings and higher-risk pieces;
  • Keep the same granite color and finish across both thicknesses;
  • Separate each thickness clearly by bundle or project area.

This approach retains the price and freight advantages of 20mm while using 30mm only where it provides a meaningful fabrication benefit.

What to Confirm Before Ordering

Before confirming the slab thickness, the main countertop requirements should already be clear:

  • Countertop and island dimensions;
  • Sink and cooktop opening sizes;
  • Required edge profiles;
  • Whether laminated edges will be produced locally;
  • Estimated quantities in 20mm and 30mm;
  • Expected slab area per container;
  • Packing and bundle arrangement.

When finished dimensions or drawings are available, we can recommend whether the order should remain at 20mm, move to 30mm or combine both thicknesses.

Our Recommendation

For established countertop fabricators, 20mm should be the first option for standard granite slab imports.

It is generally sufficient for regular kitchen countertops and vanity tops while providing:

  • 33.3% lower stone use per square metre;
  • Approximately 25–27kg less weight per square metre;
  • About 8%–10% lower slab price;
  • Potentially about 33% lower ocean freight per square metre.

Use 30mm where the additional stone section provides a clear benefit, especially for large islands, major openings, narrow stone sections and solid thick edges.

The most economical purchasing plan is not to use 30mm for every countertop. It is to use 20mm for the main order and add 30mm only where the countertop design and fabrication risk justify the additional cost and weight.

FAQ

Is 20mm granite thick enough for kitchen countertops?

Yes. A 20mm granite slab is suitable for most standard kitchen countertops when the top has reliable cabinet or frame support and normal-sized sink and cooktop openings.

Is 30mm granite stronger than 20mm granite?

A 30mm slab has a thicker stone section and normally provides greater rigidity than the same granite at 20mm. It is useful for large finished pieces, major cutouts and solid thick edges but is not necessary for every standard countertop.

How much cheaper is 20mm granite than 30mm granite?

A 20mm granite slab generally costs about 8%–10% less than the equivalent 30mm material. It also weighs one-third less, which can reduce ocean freight per square metre by approximately 33% in a weight-limited full-container shipment.

Can 20mm and 30mm granite be combined in one project?

Yes. A project can use 20mm for standard countertops and vanity tops while using 30mm for large islands, wide openings or higher-risk pieces.

Can granite slab thickness be customized?

Yes. Selected granite materials may be produced in thicknesses outside the normal 20mm and 30mm range, including 18mm and other custom specifications for specific projects.
