Before a marble container arrives, you need the actual weight and dimensions of the heaviest bundle or crate, plus its lifting or fork points. These figures determine what equipment is needed at destination.
Full slabs normally arrive as upright wooden bundles or A-frame-type supports. Cut-to-size pieces, project pieces and tiles normally arrive in wooden crates or pallets. When the container arrives, compare the cargo condition with the loading record before anything is moved. If a bundle, crate or restraint has shifted, the planned unloading method may need to change.

The loading method starts with the form of the finished product.
Full slabs are normally loaded upright in wooden bundles, cradles or A-frame-type supports. For our standard slab packing, we normally control a finished bundle at about 2.5 tonnes maximum, with at least 100 mm of forklift clearance below the frame. These are our own packing and handling controls, not universal limits for every supplier.
Before loading, we confirm the bundle weight, dimensions, lifting access and planned position in the container. The layout is not based only on how much space remains. Weight also needs to be distributed through the container rather than concentrated in one area.
We also consider destination access before the layout is finalised. A bundle that fits into the container still has to be reachable by the buyer's unloading equipment.
Cut-to-size pieces, vanity components, wall panels and other fabricated project pieces are normally shipped in wooden crates. Our standard export crates are generally controlled at about 1.5 tonnes maximum per crate.
Once the crate is complete, container loading is based on the external unit rather than on how the individual stone pieces are arranged inside it. Tall or irregular project crates may also need clear centre-of-gravity and lifting-point markings because two crates with the same weight can behave differently when lifted.
Marble tiles are normally loaded as wooden crates or palletised crate units. Thin tiles may have foam boxes or extra internal protection, but the forklift or crane still handles the completed crate or pallet.
For tile cargo, the loading team checks the actual crate weight, external dimensions, fork entry, position in the container and any stacking restrictions. The shipment-specific gross weight matters more than a generic “typical” tile-crate weight.
After the bundles and crates are positioned, they have to remain stable during road transport, terminal handling and the sea voyage.
For upright slab bundles, the main movements to control are:

Depending on the shipment, the securing arrangement may use timber blocking, bracing, rated restraints or lashing.
The exact arrangement changes with the bundle design, cargo weight and loading layout. What matters is that the unit is restrained as a complete load and does not rely only on its own weight or on a neighbouring bundle to remain stable.
Wooden crates have the same basic issue in a different form. The crate may hold the marble securely inside, but the complete crate can still slide or tip inside the container. A tightly filled container is therefore not automatically a properly secured container.
For crates and pallets, we consider the gaps between units, movement toward the doors or front wall, lateral movement and any unit with a high or offset centre of gravity.
Packing protects the stone inside the bundle or crate. Container securing controls the movement of the completed bundle, crate or pallet inside the container.
The buyer should know what the receiving team will have to handle before the container reaches the yard.

We also provide the container and seal numbers, unit identification and loading photographs. For mixed containers, the unit IDs matter because slab bundles, tile crates and project crates may need different equipment or a different removal order. The receiving team should be able to match the unit in front of them with the weight and handling information supplied before shipment.
The loading photos are most useful when they are taken before the doors are closed. They should show the position of the bundles or crates, visible blocking and restraint, and any unusually large or heavy unit. This gives the receiving team a reference for what was loaded at origin and what they should expect when the doors are opened.
The total shipment weight does not tell you whether your forklift or crane can unload the container. The critical number is usually the heaviest single unit.
For forklift handling, the buyer should compare the unit weight and dimensions with the actual rated capacity of the forklift and attachment being used. Long loads and attachments can change the effective load centre and reduce the capacity available from the machine.
The same applies to crane work: the lifting equipment and rigging need to suit the actual bundle or crate rather than a previous shipment.
The receiving area should also be ready before the container arrives, with enough working space and a stable place for the slabs, crates or pallets after they are removed.
For a first shipment, it is useful to confirm these points with the supplier before the vessel arrives rather than assuming the local warehouse can handle the same configuration used on another order. A 2.5-tonne slab bundle, a tall project crate and a pallet of tiles may all be in the same container but require different access, lifting points and receiving positions.
Before unloading, first check whether the container and cargo still appear to be in the condition expected from the loading record.
Start with the container itself. Check the container and seal numbers, the condition of the doors, obvious impact or deformation, signs of water entry and whether the container is sitting in a stable position.
Exterior damage does not automatically mean the marble inside is damaged, but it is a reason to inspect more carefully before unloading.
Once the cargo can be safely viewed, compare it with the loading photographs.

The purpose of this check is not to complete a full marble quality inspection. It is to decide whether the planned unloading method is still suitable.
If the load has visibly shifted, a frame is damaged or a crate is unstable, reassess how the cargo is supported before restraints are released or the unit is moved.
Different packing forms require different handling, so the unloading method should follow the actual cargo type.
Full slabs need the most attention because the load is both heavy and upright.
Before moving a bundle, use the shipment information to confirm which equipment will handle it and how the bundle is currently restrained. The unloading order should be planned for the whole container, not decided one bundle at a time.
Removing one bundle can change the lateral support available to the units that remain, especially for bundles deeper inside the container. Stabilising components should therefore not simply be removed because they are in the way. The bundle should be under positive mechanical control before any restraint that contributes to its stability is released.
Workers should stay clear of the area where upright slabs could fall if the load loses stability.
Whether a wooden bundle or A-frame can be removed as a complete unit, or whether part of the securing arrangement has to be released before removal, depends on the packing design and the planned unloading method.
The unit deepest in the container deserves particular attention because reach can become the limiting factor even when lifting capacity is adequate. This is why the loading layout and the buyer's available equipment should be considered together before shipment.
Cut-to-size and project cargo is generally handled as complete crates.
Before lifting, check the crate condition, marked lifting or fork points, available clearance and any centre-of-gravity marking provided for the unit. Tall or irregular crates need more attention because a high or offset centre of gravity can make them less stable once lifted.
A broken base or damaged side support can also change how the crate carries its weight, so visibly damaged crates should be assessed before normal handling.
Tile crates and pallets are usually more straightforward than upright slab bundles, but they are still heavy cargo.
Use the shipment weight and forklift data to confirm the equipment is suitable, then check fork engagement, the crate or pallet base, unloading clearance and stacking condition.
Internal foam boxes or other tile packaging should normally remain intact until the crate has been removed from the container and placed in a stable receiving area.
If tile crates are stacked or closely packed, remove them in the planned sequence rather than opening or rearranging cartons inside the container. The external crate or pallet should remain the handling unit until it is safely set down.
After unloading, check first for damage related to transport or handling rather than repeating a complete material QC inspection.

A useful receiving record covers three points:
Before opening: container number, seal, doors and exterior condition.
After opening, before moving cargo: unit positions, visible restraints and any evidence of movement.
After unloading: unit identification and visible transport or handling damage.
If something has shifted or been damaged, record the container number, unit ID and condition before the cargo is further moved or separated from its packing. Send the photos and unit information to us as soon as possible. We can compare them with our factory packing records, loading photos and container records.
Once the inspection is complete, move slabs to suitable A-frames or slab racks and place crates or pallets on stable ground in the planned receiving area.
At that point, the container loading and unloading process is complete.
